Fall is one of our favorite times of year for Scamp travel as campgrounds and small towns tend to quiet after the busy summer months.  As long as one doesn’t go too late into the fall, the weather can be very nice and the fall colors spectacular.  We had a great coastal trip to Oregon in Fall 2020, so this October we decided on central and northeastern Oregon.  We left earlier in October this time to minimize the chance for bad weather.  And, as a hedge against costly last minute cancellations due to weather or fire smoke (which is very common this time of year), we booked most of our stays through Boondockers Welcome and Harvest Hosts (no charge for stay overs other than annual membership and easy to cancel plans last minute).  Because we had a lot of one night stops on our previous Oregon trip, which at times became tiring, we made sure to schedule two night stay overs every few days to break up continuous travelling. In turn, this was our longest trip in our Scamp 13’ to date.

When going north, we have a couple of usual stops we like to make to see family.  The first is my cousin Jon’s house to see him and his family in Santa Barbara (about a 4-hour drive from our home in Carlsbad, California) followed by a stay with my sister and her family in Oakland (6-hour drive from Santa Barbara).  This trip was no different and we enjoyed seeing my cousin and his family briefly before heading up to Oakland the next day.   We had a nice fajitas lunch with my sister and her family and did some walking along the canals.  There was a very loud party behind our Scamp (parked in my sister’s driveway) at night, so we listened to white noise of water and animals in our earphones to block out the party and go to sleep.  The next morning we had time to hike in one of the many forests in Oakland before heading to our next stop, Lake Siskiyou.

We arrived at the private Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort on Lake Siskiyou at around 4 p.m. (after a 6-hour drive from Oakland).  This would be our last California stop before heading into Oregon.  Lake Siskiyou is near Mt. Shasta and is a beautiful lake with hiking, biking, fishing, and boating.  Although we usually stay at State campgrounds, there really wasn’t much else around and this private resort looked nice (although more expensive than State campgrounds).  We had a great campsite (REC2) with full hookups adjacent to the lake.  The campground wasn’t busy as their season was pretty much ending, although the weather was in the 80’s and they were still serving soft serve ice-cream in their general store when we arrived!  The highlight of our stay here was riding our bikes around the 7-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop.  The lake and pines make a beautiful location to bike.  We had so much fun stopping and exploring on the ride that we lost track of time and had to rush to make the 11 a.m. checkout time to avoid getting charged for another day!  We set an all-time record in how fast we were able to get our Scamp set up to leave (less than 20 minutes)!  Since we left before lunch, we set up camp on the side of the road outside of the campground to eat (and even captured some drone images of Lake Siskiyou and Mt. Shasta!).

Our first stop into central Oregon was the town of La Pine (about a 3-hour drive north from Lake Siskiyou); the town is very close to Bend, Oregon and is in the valley of the Little Deschutes River.  The main road, the 97, which runs all the way to the top of Oregon, also runs north-south through the entire city.  We were fortunate to be able to stay at Red Oak Farms Alpacas, a Harvest Hosts location.  The farm is run by a husband and wife team and has a small number of Alpacas.  When we arrived, Ken showed us their alpaca fiber and explained the ways and economics of alpaca farming (the fiber currently sells for $4/ounce).  Ken’s wife, Nancy Lee, let us be amongst some of the alpacas and pet and walk a few.  Being at over 4,200 feet elevation, the weather was noticeably colder in La Pine, with morning temperatures around 30 degrees.  We parked our Scamp on one of their fields.  Fortunately, the Scamp’s furnace kept us warm all night.   After a quick overnight, we headed a bit north to Bend, Oregon (only a 30-minute drive away).

After a short drive from La Pine, we set our Scamp up in the driveway of a nice home in Bend, Oregon (a Boondocker’s Welcome location).  The hosts were away travelling but instructed us to park in their pull through driveway.  The weather was sunny and we set up our solar panels since we didn’t have any hookups here.  After lunch in our Scamp, we drove over to the Old Mill District close by and walked the Deschutes River Trail (while one of our bikes was being serviced at REI).  The area is very scenic and well developed with nice paths and parks along the water.  We also walked from the Old Mill District to Drake Park and then up to downtown Old Bend where there are plenty of fun shops and restaurants.   Bend has grown rapidly over recent years due to its attraction as a retirement destination and gateway for outdoor sports.

After spending the night in Bend, we continued north for 3 hours to the top of central Oregon and stopped at the Deschutes River State Recreation Area Campground.  The location is where the Columbia and Deschutes rivers join on the borders of Oregon and Washington State.  The site (A05) we stayed at has water and electric hookups.  Other than hiking and fishing, this location is pretty remote with not too much going on.  It was cold at night in the 20’s and the furnace came in handy again!  The deal breaker for us about this campground is that trains run all night long close by the campground and blow their loud train horns at all hours!  We did a long hike in the morning along the river and up on some of hill trails with scenic views over the entire area.  We saw another couple with a Scamp 16’ from Boulder, Colorado who we talked to a while, as well as seeing some other fiberglass trailers.  It’s the first time we’ve seen another Scamp in a campground.  After lunch, we were ready to move on.

Following the 84 Freeway east along the Columbia River and Oregon-Washington border, we made our way to Pendleton, Oregon (a small city best known for its major annual rodeo called The Pendleton Round Up).  We were headed to 5H Ranch, a 20 acre farm (Boondockers Welcome location) right outside the city.  The hosts offered us a great parking spot next to their blue barn with both water and electric hookups at no charge!  After setting up, we spent the afternoon walking around the farm and country roads.  The next morning, we set out and explored the small historic downtown of Pendleton.  The historic area has some nice Queen Anne Victorian homes built in the 1800s.  In addition, we learned about the Pendleton Underground – a vast network of tunnels that was once a hidden city underneath Pendleton built in the late 1800s by Chinese immigrants to provide safety from persecution.

We reached our main destination on this trip, Joseph, Oregon, a few hours after leaving Pendleton and spent four nights here.  Our campsite was at the Wallowa Lake State Park campground (site C55).  Wallowa Lake is a short drive from the quaint little town of Joseph and is in an area known as “The Little Switzerland” of Oregon.  Snowcapped tall mountains surround the lake, making it a uniquely picturesque destination.  Our campsite had full hookups, but since nights were forecasted to be below freezing, we didn’t hook up the fresh water hose (instead we relied on our interior fresh water tank).  We also poured RV antifreeze into our shower drain to protect the pump and left our hot water heater on at night.  Additionally, we kept our furnace set to 58 degrees each night so everything inside the Scamp (including ourselves) would stay warm.  In the morning, when getting ready for the day, we usually let the furnace pump hot air for a while to make the Scamp nice and toasty inside.  We took a pedal rail car tour on our first full day in Joseph at Joseph Branch Railriders!  The tour goes from Joseph to Enterprise and returns passing through farmland with stunning views of the mountains along the way.  The entire journey takes about 2 hours and is 11 miles round trip.  The pedal rail cars have electric pedal assist, so travelling back up hill to Joseph was an easy pedal (I even flew my drone and took pictures while we pedaled back!).  On the days following, we enjoyed hikes in the hills above the lake and walks through the campground and lakeside.  We did our laundry one morning at a coin-op in downtown Joseph and shopped along the tree lined streets until our clothes were washed and dried!  The tree leaves were mostly bright red as Fall had decisively set in up in this mountain town.  We even enjoyed some snow flurries a couple of the nights in our Scamp!  Joseph was our favorite stop on the trip because of its natural beauty and scenic town center.

To make up some time after the long stay in Joseph, we headed directly to Madras which took about six hours as we retraced our steps back along the 84 and then down through central Oregon on the 97.  Madras is a small city about an hour north of Bend and home to the Erickson Aircraft Collection, a privately owned collection of airworthy vintage aircraft.  This is a fantastic aviation museum located on the tarmac of the Madras municipal airport.  This airport used to be the home of a B17 bomber base during WWII.  We had the great fortune of being able to stay on the tarmac at this airfield and tour the museum (Harvest Hosts location)!  There are some notable WWII airplanes, including a B17, P38 Lightning and Corsair, among many others in the hangar – most of them kept in flying condition.  When we were there, the hangar was open and planes were being moved out onto the airfield so one plane could be taken out for flying.  The museum also has a great shop with some really awesome aviation related t-shirts.  There was only one other RV staying overnight so we each had plenty of space in the large lot adjacent to the runway.  After the sun set, air traffic stopped and it was very quiet all night.  We really enjoyed our stay at this historic stop.

The next day we drove only ten minutes to stay on a farm in Culver, Oregon (Boondockers Welcome location).  The area is extremely flat with wide open plains and mountains in the distance.  The owners of the 100-acre working potato farm put us up at the side of their barn and supplied us water and electricity at no charge.  We launched our drone and took some aerial images of the farm which we shared with our hosts (who later requested additional images).  In the wee hours of the next morning it became very cold inside the Scamp; the furnace had stopped because we ran out of propane in tank 1 (it was in the 20’s at night).  Fortunately, a quick flip of the propane tank selector and we were on tank 2 and getting warm air again!  An important point is to never travel on long trips in cold climates without two full propane tanks.  We enjoyed going for a walk in the fields the next morning with one of the owners, Karen, and her dog Zeke.  She told us about what life is like on the potato farm and gave us a tour of her home and garden.  Life on the farm sounds like a lot of hard work!

Our next stop was Train Mountain Railroad Museum in Chiloquin, Oregon (about a 3-hour drive south from Culver, between Crater Lake National Park to the north and Klamath Falls to the south).  This is the largest miniature railroad in the world!  The trains are small, but still can pull carts carrying people!  There are over four miles of tracks that weave through the surrounding pine covered hillsides.  The longest loop takes over four hours round trip!  On top of a fantastic location with a nice outdoor full scale train exhibit (you can go inside most of the trains on your own self-guided tour), Train Mountain has several great campgrounds.  We stayed at the free campground provided to Harvest Hosts members.  Although there are no hookups, we did find a water spigot.  We enjoyed the fun self-guided train tour the afternoon we arrived, the highlight being the mega beast radial snowplow train.  The next morning, we were lucky enough to be offered a free tour ride by a member volunteer.  We spent about half an hour on the train touring some of the park and hearing about how these little trains work and the hobbyists who run them.  This is a must stop for anyone with even a remote interest in trains!

After travelling over two weeks and a couple of thousand miles, this fantastic journey was finally coming to an end.  We made our way through Klamath Falls and then into California.  We could tell we entered California on our 4 ½ hour drive from Chiloquin, Oregon to our next stop in Corning, California when we noticed the price of gas jump over one dollar per gallon!  We stayed in the driveway of someone’s ranch home (Boondockers Welcome location) in the small city of Corning, a farming community with many olive tree farms (known as the Olive City, with an olive festival every Fall).  We had a nice walk down a flat farm road at sunset and a quiet overnight stay.  The next morning we continued to head south for three hours to Oakland and stayed over once again at my sister’s house.  This time we had a nice lunch at one of our favorite eateries, A+ Burger.  Now, with the 31st only a couple of weeks away, many homes in Alameda were spookified for Halloween.  We had a nice evening walk with my sister and nephew viewing some of these scary displays.  The next morning, we headed out early and arrived in Santa Barbara in the afternoon and set up once again in my cousin’s driveway.  We enjoyed vegan Chinese take-out that night with my cousin Jon.  We arrived home early the next day and washed our Scamp 13’ inside and out along with our tow vehicle to be fully prepped for our next upcoming adventure!

Secret Planning Tools & Strategies For Long Distance RV Trips
Planning a long distance RV trip with multiple stops can be overwhelming.  Questions such as:  Where to go?  Where to stay?  How much will campgrounds cost?  How long to stay at each stop?  Are there amenities such as hookups?  Where are dump stations along the route?  and many others often arise when arranging such a trip.  Where to begin?!!!  I’ve put together a number of tools and strategies below which hopefully will help answer many of these questions and make the process of trip planning fun.

When and Where to Go?
The answer to this question is often dictated by the weather.  Unless one has an important reason to go somewhere specific, such as a business trip or family gathering, most of us will head to locations where the weather is good so we can enjoy our RV vacations (which usually involve a lot of outdoors activities).   In planning trips for our Scamp 13’ (with San Diego as our home base), paying attention to good weather usually means planning coast and mountain trips in the summer, all types of trips in the late spring and early fall, and coast and desert trips in the winter.  By following this method, we usually avoid temperature extremes, which can not only be extremely uncomfortable, but also damaging to the pipes (e.g. freezing) in small travel trailers.  Living in California, we are lucky in that there are usually locations throughout the year where the weather is favorable for small travel trailer trips.

In addition to the weather, it’s also a good idea to plan trips around locations of interest to you.  It only makes sense going places you will enjoy.  I have a friend who likes to attend the big annual quilting show in Sisters, Oregon every July.  Another friend loves fishing and has a standing reservation at Silver Lake Resort.  Building a trip around these activities is the perfect way to enjoy your small travel trailer and a fun interest at the same time.  Personally, I enjoy going to National and State Parks for the outdoor activities and many of my trips are to these locations.  After all, one of the big advantages of having a small travel trailer is being able to stay within these parks (often where hotels are non-existent or extremely expensive like the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite).  But, I also enjoy going to unique locations of interest, such as farm stays or specialty locations.  For example, I’m currently planning a fall trip through Oregon and hope to stay at several specialty stops including this alpaca farm, airport and airplane museum, small railroad depot, and organic farm.

Lastly, it’s often our schedules that dictate when we go.  For example, families may only be able to travel in the summer.  In these cases, pay close attention not only to the weather but also the potential for crowds when trip planning.  Even if the weather is good at a particular location during the planned travel month, if may not be a lot of fun if there are big crowds (such as at certain National parks).  I’ve found that going to lesser known parks can be equally enjoyable during the summer months.  For example, we had an awesome time at Lassen Volcanic National Park this past July and probably enjoyed it as much as our Yosemite trip two months earlier.

Planning Tools
Once you have decided when and where you want to go, it’s time to utilize some key travel planning tools which will not only help you decide on the best travel routes, best places to stay, and where to dump, but also potentially will save you a lot of money and make your trip more memorable!  The first tool I recommend is using Google Maps to search drive times between your planned stops.  Search “drive time from X to X”.

We try to limit our daily driving to no more than 4 hours per day (and driving no more than 2 consecutive days in a row).  However, we do sometimes make exceptions to facilitate certain trips (occasionally driving 5 or 6 hours if necessary and/or driving more than 2 consecutive days in a row if the drives are 3 hours or less and we want to visit a certain location).  For example, in the summer we go to Mammoth Lakes in the mountains (about a 7 hour drive), but it’s not possible to stay overnight midway as it is the desert and too hot.  However, when we arrive we often stay several days at each location, making the long drive on the first day worthwhile.

A second free tool is the AAA Triptik Travel Planner.  It’s free, but you have to have a AAA membership if you want to save your trip (which isn’t really a big deal unless you are plotting out a lot of stops and want to come back to refer to the website map in the future).  This is a fantastic route planner because it gives a lot of great information.  It shows your route on a map along with pins at each stop (which you can print).  You can set a time or distance interval that highlights with a circle on the map each interval.  For example, if you want to limit each day to 4 hours driving, you can set a 4 hour interval and then the tool highlights these intervals on the map with red circles.  The map lists trip total drive time and miles along with complete step by step driving directions (if you want).  There is also a selectable legend that will show gas stations, campsites, restaurants, and other areas of interest on the map.

Sometimes it may be necessary to find an RV DUMP Station along your route.  Having this information in advance can be very useful as it may allow you to stay at free locations (such as Boondockers Welcome or Harvest Host sites) without having to spend money for a campground just to have access to a dump.  This RV Dump Stations Map by Roundabout Publications (publisher of travel books) is a third free tool which shows Dump stations all over the country (note:  I have not verified the accuracy of this map so use at your own discretion).  In addition to showing dump station locations, the map also has a legend indicating the cost of the station (some are even free!).  In our experience, private dumps generally charge between $7 to $10 per dump.

State and regional parks often have websites and maps showing state and regional campground site locations (the 4th free tool).  For example, on the Oregon trip I’m planning, I referred to the Oregon State Parks “Find a Park” map extensively.  And many regional parks have campground maps that provide campsite locations.  For example, Sonoma County has this regional campground map.  I’ve found that state and regional parks campgrounds often offer very generous amounts of campsite space and tend to be an excellent value.

If you think you might enjoy some niche stays, such farms, wineries, museums, or people’s homes/driveways, consider joining both Boondockers Welcome and Harvest Hosts (inexpensive annual memberships).  With this 5th tool, just a couple of stays will offset the cost of the annual subscription.  Before signing up, go to their websites and view host location maps.  The Harvest Host map even lets you plot your route and shows stay locations on the map!  If it looks like there are many places to stay on your route, perhaps give it a try.  We’ve had great stays using these memberships and enjoyed meeting the hosts.  Also, memberships can allow you to save a lot of money if you stay at multiple locations throughout the year (as individual stays are free / although we generally give a small gift or make a purchase).

Power Tools:  Using All Tools Together
I’ve found it incredibly efficient to use all of the above tools simultaneously together to review maps regarding the route and stops (Google Maps / AAA Triptik), Dump station locations (RV Dump Stations Map) , available campgrounds (AAA Triptik / State & Regional Parks map), and boondocking sites (Boondockers Welcome / Harvest Hosts).  To do this, just open up multiple browsers so you can jump back and forth comparing all the information.  Doing this allowed me to quickly see driving times and possible campsite locations on my planned trip.  I was also able to identify some interesting boondocking possibilities without being concerned about a lack of a dump station at these locations (since I also had the Dump Station map and knew there were dumping options on the drive).

Fun Things to Do
Now that you have figured out when and where you are going, made a map of your trip (and chosen stops so you aren’t driving much longer than 4 hours per day and limiting travelling to no more than two consecutive days of driving), it’s a good idea to get some insider information on fun things to do at your locations.  A few sources I’ve found helpful (beyond just Google searches) are campground reviews, State tourism commission websites, and a couple of travel websites.  For example, when I searched Wallowa Lake State Park campground reviews, along with actual reviews of the campground, I found some great tips.  There are recommendations for things to do and places to go, like taking the tramway to the top of Mount Howard, trails to hike, great restaurants (like the Wallowa Lake Lodge), good shopping (including art and bronze galleries) in the town of Joseph, and fishing.  State tourism commission websites are also good sources of local knowledge.  I checked Oregon’s “Travel Oregon” website for our upcoming trip and found some interesting things to do that I didn’t see anywhere else.  For example, I definitely plan to reserve a pedal train car with Joseph Branch Railriders!  I did something like this in Sweden and it was a blast!  Tripadvisor and TripSavvy are a couple of travel advisory websites that are good for providing lists of fun things to do.  Here is the TripSavvy list for Joseph, OR.

Planning Pearls for Your Small Travel Trailer Adventures

Having a small travel trailer means you are now free to travel the world (or maybe at least your continent)!  Interesting side note — although North and South America are treated as separate continents in the seven-continent model, they may also be viewed as a single continent known as America.  So, for all of us living in America, we have tremendous travel options for exploring with our small travel trailers…if you dare!

The first thing to do once you get your small travel trailer is to figure out what type of travel you want to do.  If you’re like me, you’re probably interested in exploring State and National Parks.  Starting in your home state is a good strategy because you won’t be too far from home if something happens and you need to regroup.  On our first preliminary “shake down” overnight trip to Palm Desert, just a couple hours drive away from our home in San Diego, we discovered we couldn’t get our hot water heater to work!  Fortunately, we were close to home and only had booked one night (which we spent without hot water).  I called Scamp when we returned home and we discovered a hidden on/off switch at the hot water heater on our Scamp 13’ which the factory was supposed to turn on!  In any case, I highly recommend taking your first few trips close to home so you are prepared in case something happens.

To discover which State and National Parks are in your home state, visit your State Parks website and the National Parks website.  The National Parks website has a search function for National Parks by state.  Google maps is a good tool once you find some parks you are interested in to get an idea of where the parks are and the drive time to each park.  It’s also a good idea to check monthly weather for the location to make sure it won’t be too hot or too cold the month you plan on going.  This is especially important for popular parks for which it is generally a good idea to reserve months in advance (5 – 6 months out for National Parks).  For strategies on how to secure a popular campground, see my article “Winning Yosemite’s Campground Reservations Online Lottery”.  On your first visit to a National Park, make sure to purchase the annual “America The Beautiful” National Park Pass.    One of the best values in all of camping, this pass costs only $80 and lets you and your family (not to exceed 4 adults) into the National Parks without paying the entrance fees (typically $35 per car).  You can also share the pass with family and friends (each pass can be signed by two main pass owners)!!!

Regional parks can also be great places to camp and explore.  These are a bit harder to find because they are generally run by cities and counties with a variety of different types of websites and reservations systems, but online searches of different cities can uncover some of these gems.  Additionally, apps like iOverlander, RV Parky, and ParkAdvisor may provide good leads on these campgrounds.  Be prepared to set up online accounts for these regional parks and expect different types of online experiences.  For example, one such park in California is Calico Ghost Town (a genuine old Western ghost town!).  I was able to make reservations for it on the San Bernardino County Regional Parks website.  This place was home to one of the largest silver strikes in California which happened in 1881.  Another interesting regional park in California is Cachuma Lake which can be reserved through the Santa Barbara County Parks website.   Like Calico Ghost Town, this campground requires one to sign up on the specific county website.  So, you’ll find that if you do decide to visit lots of regional park campgrounds (which you should plan on!), then you will end up having numerous park website accounts (all free).  So, it’s a good idea to have a great password manager that can store all these website URLs with your usernames and passwords.

We try to limit driving to no more than 4 hours to reach each campsite so that our trips are enjoyable.  Sometimes we are forced to drive a bit longer, but generally never more than 5 hours (unless there is an unusual circumstance).  One such circumstance was our trip last summer to Mammoth Lakes from our home in San Diego.  We were forced to drive nonstop over 7 hours because stopping halfway in the desert would have meant staying overnight in our trailer (which does not have AC) in unbearably hot conditions.  This is a long trip, but for a stay of a week or longer it was bearable.  But, overall, we choose to follow our 4 hour rule.  Another thing we like to keep in mind when planning our trips is that, for now, we currently need to Dump (main limitation is the Grey water tank) every third day.  With this requirement, we try to schedule trips so that we are staying at a location with hookups or a general Dump station every three days.  If that’s not possible, then we Dump during our ride to the next campsite at a service station which has a Dump station (these can be found within the apps like RV Parky or by an online search).  Note:  I’m currently working on a portable Grey water auxiliary storage system solution which should double our time between Dumps.  Stay tuned for a future article on this system.

With the 4 hour drive time rule in mind, it’s good to have some expanded options for mid trip stay over locations between your starting point and destination.  These options may include family driveways, Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome locations, free BLM public land areas, and private RV campgrounds.  Our favorite midway stays when travelling are either family driveways or Boondockers Welcome locations.  Our first choice is staying with family because it gives us a chance to reconnect and visit without being a burden since we are self-sufficient in our Scamp 13’.  We have stayed in driveways at my cousin’s in Santa Barbara and my sister’s in Oakland many times while in transit from our home in San Diego to destinations in Northern California and Oregon.  We have also had great success in overnights at Boondockers Welcome locations.  Please see my article “Free Stayovers with Boondockers Welcome and Harvest Hosts”.  These services are available via inexpensive annual subscriptions and allow for some unique experiences like overnights at farms and wineries.

In addition to using your small travel trailer for visiting State and National Parks, another idea is to explore other settings or locations in which you have a strong interest.  Of course, these can be fantastic outdoor wilderness locations, such as Lake Tahoe or the Oregon Coast (which we have enjoyed greatly).   But, such trips can also include other locations which interest you such as for rock hounding, museums, amusement parks, star gazing, city touring, etc.  One trip that I would like to do in the future is to stay at Gilbert Ray Campground in Tucson, AZ and visit the Pima Air & Space Museum since I love aviation.  And, because I love star gazing, trips to dark skies parks (like Anza Borrego Desert State Park) are always rewarding.  Another fun trip we had was a stay at Hearst San Simeon State Park which provided a great rock hounding experience (searching for moonstones on the beach in Cambria) as well as observing the elephant seals!

There are so many different ways and purposes for using your small travel trailer.  And, since everyone is different, there will no doubt be a lot of different viewpoints on the best types of trips.  But, however you choose to travel, there is one thing for certain –your small travel trailer will offer you a golden ticket to see the world (or at least your continent  …  if you dare)!

The Economics of Owning a Small Travel Trailer

If you’re like me, you probably want to stay in a nice place when travelling.  A place that is both clean and comfortable and located in a desirable location.  And, the lodging cost must not be exorbitantly expensive.  Everyone has different standards regarding what is an acceptable accommodation, and this will greatly determine the outcome of a cost comparison between buying a small travel trailer vs. staying in a hotel when travelling.  For people who don’t mind staying in inexpensive motels and whose main objective is to save money (and perhaps don’t desire or appreciate the experiences and beauty of staying right inside a National or State Park or are not concerned about bed bugs), buying a small travel trailer may not make economic sense.  But, for many, the case for buying a small travel trailer is compelling.

A lot of people who own small travel trailers likely don’t purchase one with the sole purpose of saving money.  They like the freedom of having their own home on wheels they can take with them whenever they get the desire to travel.   And they enjoy the comfort a small travel trailer provides — having a small travel trailer means the interior can be tailored to the owner’s preferences, including colors, deluxe bedding and personalized amenities (like shampoos, gourmet food, etc.).  And, there are far fewer concerns about germs since everything in your space is yours!  This is especially true during the pandemic.  For us, the main reason we decided to buy a small travel trailer is so that we could stay in the midst of beautiful State and National Parks (where it would be almost impossible, extremely expensive or uncomfortable to stay otherwise).

The average rate at a Hilton hotel in the U.S. last year was around $145 / night and slightly over $200 / night at a Marriott.  And, rates at hotels within National Parks are often much higher.  For example, as of this writing, the rate at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite for June 2021 starts at $341 / night (and goes up to $1,302 / night).  Lodging rates in larger popular cities, such as San Francisco, also tend to be particularly high.  In contrast, campsite rates at State and National Parks are typically $45 or less / night.  It is important to note that there is often rate inflation, annually pushing nightly hotel rates continually higher year after year.  In contrast, once you buy your small travel trailer, the only rate inflation you may experience will be the campground fees (which generally are very low).  And, after spending a night at a hotel, you’ve spent your money and walk away (just carrying away the experience).  In contrast, at the end of your trip staying in your small travel trailer, you get to drive it home and use it again and again!  And, interestingly, small fiberglass travel trailers like the Scamp, typically hold their value very well over time so you shouldn’t experience significant depreciation either.

Because everyone’s situation is different (e.g. hotel preference, RV preference, number of people travelling, type of tow vehicle, food preference, # of days travelling….), it would be very superficial to draw a specific exact numerical conclusion on the cost savings which may be achieved by travelling by small travel trailer.  But, in general, the savings tend to be significant because nightly rates at campgrounds are usually significantly less than at hotels and food can be brought along and prepared in the trailer vs. paying a premium at restaurants.  However, there are some considerations that may make travelling by small travel trailer more expensive or less desirable.  For example, if a tow vehicle is not already owned, this could be a significant expense.  Also, driving long distances each day can significantly raise the cost of a driving trip due to fuel costs.  Additionally, buying a more expensive small travel trailer (e.g. Airstream) or paying a lot to rent one can eliminate any cost savings as well.  And, some people may just prefer hotels and eating out at restaurants despite higher costs.  And, in some situations, hotels may be better situated for a specific location preference.

Having just completed our first year owning our 2020 Scamp 13’ small travel trailer — spending 31 nights during 6 trips and visiting 22 locations – our experience has been extremely positive and economically sound.  We paid about $18K for our almost fully loaded Scamp (with wider 54” bed and front bathroom), including the $2,195 delivery charge (driven from the Scamp factory in Backus, Minnesota to our home in San Diego, California).  We store our Scamp in our garage, so there are no storage costs.  We pay less than $400 / year for travel trailer insurance.  California PTI registration (for travel trailers 16’ or less) is only $10 every 5 years!  Maintenance costs on small travel trailers are extremely low.  Our campground stays for the year averaged around $33 / night for a total of just over $1K for our first year (31 nights) of travelling in our Scamp 13’.  One contributing factor to this low rate is that a number of stay overs were for free at either relative’s homes or Harvest Hosts or Boondockers Welcome sites.  We also brought our own food along for all our trips or had meals with relatives at their homes.  If we had stayed in hotels for the 31 nights and purchased meals each day, we probably would have conservatively spent around $200 / night or over $6K for our first year [31 nights x ($150 / night + $50 / meals / day for 2 people)].  So, in our case, based on our first year of travel, we saved roughly $5K in one year by owning a small travel trailer, which is almost 30% the cost of the trailer in savings.  It’s easy to see, that if one purchases a reasonably priced small travel trailer (<$20K), it will likely pay for itself in just a few years of travel if used regularly.

We’ve found the benefits of owning and travelling with a small travel trailer go way beyond economic.  We’ve been able to experience exquisitely beautiful locations in a variety of different settings in State and National Parks over the past year (see our Adventures section).  Despite what is regularly reported in the news, we did not experience crowds at the campgrounds we’ve visited.  We did have some difficulty in finding open campgrounds at the last minute, but always found alternative available locations.  The campsites have usually been extremely quiet.  And, we have not missed the typical noises coming from behind a hotel room wall, sheet inspections of a hotel room bed, being very hygienically careful in hotel bathrooms or wondering about food safety when eating out.  It’s been great waking up in nature and making pancakes on our stove or meeting up with friends also staying at the campground for a hike.  Watching a movie at a remote location is also a special treat (see How to Watch Movies in the Wild).  We’ve also enjoyed staying over in relatives’ driveways to visit as well as free stay overs at farms (Harvest Hosts / Boondockers Welcome).   Lastly, we’ve made a number of friends who we never would have met without staying in campgrounds.

Owning a small travel trailer can not only be an economic win as a travelling solution, but may also provide unexpected social, culinary, fitness, and soul filling opportunities along the way.  Highly recommended!

Free Stayovers with Boondockers Welcome & Harvest Hosts

Sometimes things seem a little too good to be true.  The first time we heard about RV membership services like Boondockers Welcome and Harvest Hosts we thought there must be some sort of gimmick to it.  Who would let you stay at their home or on their farm for no money (and potentially even let you use some of their resources like water and electricity)?  We wondered if there would be surcharges or other gotchas.  Or, perhaps it would be very difficult to secure a stay over (like at State and National Parks).  It seemed hard to understand how this camping model really worked.

Since the cost of an annual membership of both organizations is very low (less than the cost of one night’s stay at a typical RV park), we decided to give them a try figuring we had little to lose (especially if we were able to stay at least one night during the annual membership term).  Joining is very easy and is all done quickly online.  Once you complete payment, you can then sign into each of the websites and write up a profile that describes yourselves and your RV.  It is significant to note that both services require the RV to be completely self-contained (meaning sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation are all enclosed in the RV — toilet, sink, and grey tank are required).  Once your profile is set up, you can search the available locations (with descriptions on what is offered).  After you decide on a location and verify it can accommodate your rig length, you can then make a stay request (on Boondockers Welcome, this is done entirely online through messaging with the host and on Harvest Hosts you actually have to call or text the host).

Boondockers Welcome allows searches by location on a map with host sites depicted by a trailer.  When the trailer is clicked on, more information appears about the location which can then be opened to reveal the site details (e.g. number of spots, maximum length of trailer, house rules, utilities available, reviews by users …..).  Incredibly, there are plenty of Boondockers Welcome locations across the US and Canada (and sprinkled throughout the world)!  Most of the Boondockers Welcome locations allow stays of up to 2 or 3 days, but hosts may allow a longer stay if they choose.  Once you find your desired location and verify the space can accommodate your RV / trailer, you enter your arrival date and number of days you want to stay from the pull down menu.  After your request is submitted, you are prompted to message the host and tell a little about why you are travelling.  The host will then view your profile which lists your RV type and make a decision on your stay.  You will receive an email (and text) with the acceptance decision as soon as it’s made.  It’s good to stay in touch with the host through the messages center as your arrival date gets close.

Harvest Hosts, like Boondockers Welcome, provides a search map to find locations.  The map is color coded with icons denoting if the location is either a winery (red wine glass), farm (yellow barn), museum or other attraction (green building), or brewery / distillery (brown beer mug).  You can enter some preferences such as RV length, if the location is pet friendly, and the type of location when you conduct a search.  Once you find a location that looks good, and click on it, you will see a description, including the address of the business along with how many spaces are available, the maximum RV length allowed, and if the location is pet friendly.  To reserve the spot, a number is provided to either call (or sometimes text) the host.  Generally, acceptance is given on the spot over the phone or via text.

While both Boondockers Welcome and Harvest Hosts provide places to stay for your RV adventures, they are oriented a bit differently.  Boondockers Welcome locations are usually provided by fellow campers or those interested in travelling by RV.  The properties are generally the hosts’ homes (which could be driveways in cities or spots on large parcels of land or farms outside the city).  And, it seems like the primary motivation of many Boondockers Welcome hosts in providing overnight stays is to meet and help out fellow travelers as well as socialize with them.  Hosts also get discounts on guest memberships and credits when guests stay (another incentive to become a host).  These hosts generally don’t expect anything in return for your stay and are often very generous in their time and resources.  So, it’s important that guests are well-behaved and appreciative to keep this system working.  Harvest Hosts locations on the other hand are mostly businesses which have space to accommodate certain size RVs.  In general, the Harvest Hosts location does expect the guest to make a purchase.  Since Harvest Hosts locations are mostly wineries and farms, this often means purchasing a bottle of wine or other product from the farm.  From our experiences in California, the Harvest Hosts locations seem to offer less in the way of utilities (e.g. water, electricity, dump) than Boondockers Welcome locations.

Our overall impressions of both memberships are extremely positive.  After signing up and logging in, we found that it is usually very easy to secure reservations (often with very few dates already blocked for any given location).  And, given the extremely low annual price of each service, joining both seems a no-brainer.  There really isn’t much of a gotcha in these services (beyond the expectation of buying something when staying at Harvest Hosts locations).  Boondockers Welcome seems to be the better value if your goal is to have plenty of places to stay on your travels and aren’t looking specifically to stay at a farm or winery.  For example, if you are doing a cross country road trip, Boondockers Welcome provides great opportunities for free stops all along the way (and many in scenic locations).  And, there seem to be more Boondockers Welcome sites within big cities, whereas Harvest Hosts locations, being mostly wineries and farms, are often out of the city.  For those who love wine, joining Harvest Hosts would be a must.    Staying at a vineyard and having a wine tasting can be a special experience.  Boondockers Welcome locations also include farms and other special properties as well, so unique experiences aren’t just limited to Harvest Hosts.

We recently had a memorable Boondockers Welcome stay on our way home back to San Diego on a 10-day trip up to Coos Bay, Oregon.  We were looking for a stayover at a halfway point between Oakland and San Diego.  We found a miniature donkey farm on the Boondockers Welcome map and messaged the host.  She was especially gracious and we booked an overnight stay right away through the online messages center within the Boondockers Welcome website.  We did have to drive down a long dirt road to get to the farm, but it was well worth it.  The farm is situated on over 20 acres and we were told we could park anywhere!  We parked high up on a hill on a nice quiet space overlooking the valley below (near one of the miniature donkey enclosures).  We had access to water if we needed it.  The host was really nice and spent the afternoon with us showing us her animals and allowing us to feed and pet the miniature donkeys.  We gave the host a small gift (Peanuts oven mitt with kitchen towels set) to show our appreciation.  The night was extremely quiet and the stars were out.  After breakfast, we said goodbye to the donkeys and drove off.  It was one of the best stops on our entire trip!

Our first Harvest Hosts stay was at an olive oil farm in Paso Robles.  The host had one spot behind their barn facing a grove of olive trees.  The location was on our way from Santa Barbara to Oakland and, therefore, wasn’t too far out of the way on our trip.  Other than a quick greeting from the host (and purchasing a $20 bottle of olive oil), we were on our own in a very quiet location (the main house was a far distance up the hill).  There weren’t really any hookups (although we were offered a $40 / night electrical hookup which we declined).  We had our solar panel and plenty of water (and propane gas for our hot water heater and stove), so we were fine without hookups at this location.  We enjoyed being out in the olive orchard and seeing the stars at night.  The experience was very tranquil and felt much nicer than any RV park we had visited.  After breakfast the next morning, and then a long walk in the country, we just drove off having gotten our money’s worth out of the annual Harvest Hosts membership in just this one stay.

My Travel Trailer Tool Kit

It only took one trip to realize having a tool kit when travelling with a small travel trailer is essential!  Even if you have no experience working on or fixing things, having some basic tools can be a real life saver.

We were staying over at a Harvest Host location on an olive tree farm in Paso Robles and had no access to electrical hookups.  We had our solar panel, so we weren’t very concerned.  Unfortunately, when I setup the panel outside, one of the two power wires slipped out of the solar panel connector.  Without the attached wire, the solar panel wouldn’t be able to keep our Scamp battery charging.  I just needed a small screw driver to secure it again, which would only take a couple of seconds.  However, such a simple task was virtually impossible without the right tool and there were no stores anywhere close by.  Fortunately, I remembered I had a micro screw driver in my drone kit and was able to use it successfully.  After this experience, I vowed to equip our Scamp travel trailer with a proper tool kit and we haven’t travelled without it ever since!

I first thought I would just buy a pre-made tool kit at Harbor Freight Tools.  They have a number of nice tool kits that are very inexpensive.  However, when I went to check them out I realized that they were all preloaded with a lot of unnecessary tools I didn’t need and, in turn, were heavy.  When one travels with a small travel trailer, it’s always a good idea to keep weight in mind.  You only want to carry the absolute essentials to keep the trailer as light as possible to make it easier for your car to tow and conserve precious space.  For example, it’s probably not necessary to have a full socket head kit for your travel trailer when you only need a few socket sizes (e.g. battery nuts, wheel lug nuts, and tongue jack nuts).  In addition, there are some specific tools (e.g. voltage meter) that are useful for the Scamp and wouldn’t necessarily be in a preloaded tool kit.  So, instead of purchasing one of the pre-made tool kits, I decided on buying specific tools individually.

After taking a lot of measurements, I found this really nice plastic box on Amazon which has plenty of room for all my tools and fits great on the floor in the Scamp’s front clothes closet!
